Aliphatic polyamides (nylons): Interplay between hydrogen bonds and crystalline structures, polymorphic transitions and crystallization

نویسندگان

چکیده

Aliphatic polyamides (nylons) constitute a family of polymers with outstanding properties and multiple applications. Despite the intensive research studies carried out nylons, there are still unsolved questions concerning crystallization processes, crystalline structures, polymorphic transitions, morphologies. Constrains imposed by strong intermolecular interactions affect amorphous state, rigid phase, molecular folding, morphology obviously structure. Some these relevant points discussed in present work.

Peptoids with aliphatic sidechains as helical structures without hydrogen bonds and collagen/ inverse-collagen type structures

Aliphatic homo-polypeptoids of NAla, NVal, NIle and NLeu both in the presence and absence of protecting groups adopt helical structures without hydrogen bonds with Φ, Ψ values of ~ 0, ± 90° with trans amide bonds. These structures are stabilized by carbonyl-carbonyl interactions and characterized by ~ 3.16 residues per turn with a pitch of ~ 6.13 Å. It has been shown that like polyvaline and po...

Synchrotron Radiation Studies on Even-Odd and Odd-Even Nylons

Aliphatic polyamides derived from odd diamine or odd dicarboxylic acid units cannot adopt a conventional sheet structure when molecular chains have an all trans conformation. However, typical fiber diffraction patterns of this sheet structure were observed in several polyamides derived from odd units such as nylons 65 and 56. Consequently, a new structure based on the establishment of intermole...

Interplay of hydrogen bonds and n→π* interactions in proteins.

Protein structures are stabilized by multiple weak interactions, including the hydrophobic effect, hydrogen bonds, electrostatic effects, and van der Waals interactions. Among these interactions, the hydrogen bond is distinct in having its origins in electron delocalization. Recently, another type of electron delocalization, the n→π* interaction between carbonyl groups, has been shown to play a...

Interplay between two phase transitions: crystallization and liquid-liquid phase separation in a polyolefin blend.

The interplay between liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and crystallization at several compositions in statistical copolymer blends of poly(ethyleneco-hexene) and poly(ethylene-cobutene) has been examined by optical microscopy (OM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The phase contrast optical microscopy shows interconnected bicontinuous structures f...

Hydrogen bonds in crystalline d-alanine: diffraction and spectroscopic evidence for differences between enantiomers

Enantiomeric amino acids have specific physiological functions in complex biological systems. Systematic studies focusing on the solid-state properties of d-amino acids are, however, still limited. To shed light on this field, structural and spectroscopic studies of d-alanine using neutron powder diffraction, polarized Raman scattering and ab initio calculations of harmonic vibrational frequenc...
